She was born on December 22, 1945, as Lila Diane Sawyer in Glasgow, Kentucky, United States. She is of American nationality, and her ethnicity is white. She was born to her parents her father Erbon Powers “Tom” Sawyer, who is a judge and her mother Jean W. Sawyer who is an elementary school teacher. She as a child was interested in journalism and wanted to be an anchor. She studied at the Seneca high School.

She ended up being an assistant of Jerry Warren, who was the White House deputy press secretary. After some years she became the suspect of Deepthroat, who leaked the classified information to the journalist Bob Woodward. But later in 2005, it was recognized that she wasn’t the one who did it the person to do it was W. Mark Felt. She didn’t get fired from the work, but she left the job and started working as a general assignment reporter at the CBS News.
Later after watching her work she was promoted to a political correspondent. She also worked as a broadcast journalist in the show Morning with Charles Kuralt. She became the first female correspondent on CBS News investigative-television newsmagazine shows 60 minutes in 1984.
