The famous personality with a good name of being one of the best lead rock singer, Grace Slick is also known as a songwriter, artist and even a former model. Today, she has turned to the age of 75, but still she is renowned for her powerful strong voice and songs. She had worked in many groups like The Great Society, Jefferson Starship, Jefferson Airplane and Starship as well as she had worked as a solo artist from the mid 1960s to the mid 1990s.
Born in Highland Park, Illinois on October 30, 1939 to Virginia from a lineal descendant and Ivan W. Wing, a Norwegian and Swedish descent, she lived in the Chicago area to Los Angeles and San Francisco because of her father’s transfer from hi working company. She had a small brother named Chris. During 1950s, family settled in Palo Alto, California where she attended Palo Alto Senior High School. Later, she joined Castilleja High School. She graduated from Finch College in New York and attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida from 1958 to 1959.
She got married to an aspiring filmmaker, Gerald ‘Jerry’ Slick after dating for a quite long time but because of some personal conflicts with her husband, she had to go through a divorce. Later, she worked as a model at an I. Magnin department store for three years. Her height is 1.7m. She then also started composing music, which includes a short film by Jerry Slick. Slick and Tricia Nixon, who is the daughter of former president, Richard Nixon are alumnae of Finch College. In the year 1971, she had an accident and crashed her car into a wall near the ‘Golden Gate Bridge’ while racing with Jorma Kaukonen. She again married Skip Johnson who was a Jefferson Starship lightning designer. As children, she has a daughter named China Wing Kantner whose father is former Jefferson Airplane guitarist, Paul Kartner. Slick had a relationship with him from 1969 to 1975.
Besides, she has also came into the limelight for her issues of alcoholism, rehabilitation experiences and also, her comments on the use of ‘LSD’, marijuana and other various substances in her interviews, autobiography and recovery books like The Harder They Fail and The Courage to Change by Gary Stromberg and Dennis Wholey respectively. Her alcoholism became a problem for the band during her 1978 European tour.
