There can not always be only heroes and lovable characters – each of our favorite series needs a villain too. Because as much as we are annoyed about these unpopular characters, every story would be so boring without them. And the more satisfying it is when they are killed.
Take, for example, Ramsay Bolton from ‘Game of Thrones’, played by actor Ivan Rheon, who wanted nothing more than to climb the iron throne. Taste it, whatever it takes. After watching for four seasons ruthlessly torturing and murdering, we celebrated it all the more as it was finally brought down.
But hated series characters do not always have to be as brutal as ‘Game of Thrones’. Even in actually quite peaceful series like ‘Friends’ or ‘The Wild Seventies’, there are characters that make you angry as a fan. Do you spontaneously come across such characters from your favorite series?
We collected once and present you the most hated characters from the most popular series.
Cersei Lannister, ‘Game of Thrones’
In the very first season of ‘Game of Thrones’ Cersei Lannister, played by Lena Headey, established herself as a hated object when she threw young Bran Stark out of the window together with twin brother Jamie. And although in between you felt a spark of pity for her, the ice-cold ruler is still unpopular.
Joffrey Baratheon, Game of Thrones
Hardly a character was as hated by ‘Game of Thrones’ as Joffrey Baratheon, played by actor Jack Gleeson. Already too young on the iron throne, the son of Cersei and her twin brother Jaime quickly showed his ruthless and brutal side. Everyone could breathe again when he finally cleared the field!
Actress Alyssa Sutherland played several seasons of the series ‘Vikings’ Aslaug, the second wife of the popular Ragnar Lothbrok. Because she competed with Lagertha, the queen of Kattegat, fans could never really accept her and did not really mourn her when she died at the end of Season Four.
Emily Waltham, ‘Friends’
Not only in drama or action series there are hated figures, but also in sitcoms, as the series ‘Friends’ proves. There was hardly a fan who did not complain about Ross Geller’s second wife, Emily Waltham, especially when she wanted to ban his friendship with Rachel.
Ted Mosby, ‘How I Met Your Mother’
Admittedly, the whole series ‘How I Met Your Mother’ revolves around protagonist Ted Mosby and his path to love. Nevertheless, he occasionally went to the pointer with his pedantic and overly romantic manner.
Priya Koothrappali, ‘The Big Bang Theory
As long as we’re on the subject of comedy series, of course, we have to mention the least popular person in ‘The Big Bang Theory’: Raj’s sister Priya Koothrappali. Leonard entered into a relationship with her, although he was still in love with Penny. Many saw Priya therefore as a troublemaker in the relationship between Leonard and Penny.
T-Bag, ‘Prison Break’
If there is someone who has given us a roller coaster of emotions, then the T-Bath, played by Robert Knepper. He was the ruthless companion of Michael and Lincoln Scofield. He commits terrible crimes and is absolutely cruel – but at the same time you get to know his human side, which makes one feel empathic.
Skyler White, ‘Breaking Bad’
Skyler White, the wife of Walter White in ‘Breaking Bad’, is played by Anna Gunn and is arguably one of the most hated characters in the series. That was mainly because she was trying to control her husband’s freedom and his drug business.
Eric Forman, ‘The Wild Seventies’
Again it is the protagonist who is the least liked: Eric Forman was played in ‘The Wild Seventies’ by actor Topher Grace and was quickly considered the most boring and annoying character of the entire sitcom.
Marnie Michaels, ‘Girls’
Complacent, exhausting, annoying – all these are adjectives that describe Marnie Michaels, played by Allison Williams, in the series ‘Girls’. By the second season at the latest, most fans of Marnie and her self-centered nature had had their fill of it.
Ray Velcoro, ‘True Detective’
What made Ray Velcoro of ‘True Detective’, played by Colin Farrell, so unpopular, was not the character itself, but his acting performance. The fans did not like how he tried to copy the popular original protagonist Cohle (Matthew McConaughey).
Shannon Rutherford, ‘Lost’
Carefree, irresponsible, and narcissistic: Shannon Rutherford, played by Maggie Grace, was more concerned with tanning on the beach in the ‘Lost’ series than the plane crash that landed her on the island.
Aleksandr Petrovsky, ‘Sex and the City’
It’s not so much the figure of Aleksandr Petrovsky in ‘Sex and the City’ in itself, who is so unpopular, but much more the love relationship between him and Carrie, which from the beginning is just superficial.
Betty Draper, ‘Mad Men’
Don Draper’s wife, Betty Draper, played by January Jones, in the series ‘Mad Men’ is a woman of stone. It is superficial, inviolable and just too robotic. These qualities coupled with their behavior in the series make them the most hated figure in the series.
Pete Campbell, ‘Mad Men’
Faithless, reckless, sadistic, lying, cruel … Pete Campbell in the series ‘Mad Men’ has everything it takes to be the most hated figure in a series. And if all that is not enough, this hairstyle is also added!
Dawson Leery, ‘Dawson’s Creek’
In ‘Dawnson’s Creek’, it is just the namesake of the series, Dawson Leery, who is considered extremely unpopular. The reason? Fans find him weeping, exaggerating and thinking he is an absolute drama queen. Through his fiery behavior, he almost destroyed a lot of friendship.
Debra Morgan, ‘Dexter’
Debra Morgan, played by Jennifer Carpenter, was the stepsister of probably the most famous TV psychopath ‘Dexter’. At the beginning, she was still an audience favorite, but later, with her hysterical way of getting in the way of Dexter, she became increasingly unpopular.
Craig Middlebrooks, ‘Parks and Recreation’
Either you love him or you hate him: Craig Middlebrooks from ‘Parks and Recreation’ is admittedly an eye-catching character with a penchant for drama and a very shrill voice.
Piper Chapman, ‘Orange is the New Black’
Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schelling, is the protagonist of the Netflix series ‘Orange Is the New Black’. But after she landed in prison, she quickly distinguished herself by her whiny and annoying nature. Although she is somewhat “hardened” today, she is still one of the rather unpopular figures in the series.
Although he also got his own series afterwards, in his original series ‘Buffy’ we found him mostly unbearable: Angel, played by David Boreanaz.
Rachel Berry, ‘Glee’
It’s hard to imagine that there are people who have seen the series ‘Glee’ and did not find Rachel’s character at least temporarily incredibly exhausting and annoying.
Lori Grimes, ‘The Walking Dead’
The wife of Rick Grimes, Lori Grimes, was probably the most hated figure in the famous zombie series ‘The Walking Dead’. Maybe that was why her death in Season 3 did not really upset the audience.
Adam Galloway, ‘House of Cards’
Actually, it’s not like we did not like Adam Galloway, played by Ben Daniels, in House of Cards. He was just an unnecessary and uninteresting character, we find.
Dolores Abernathy, ‘Westworld’
While Dolores Abernathy is still the protagonist and one of the most popular serial heroines in the first season of ‘West World’, she shows in the second season their dark side and is for the fans rather the villain of the series.
April Kepner, ‘Gray’s Anatomy’
Although the character April Kepner in ‘Gray’s Anatomy’ became increasingly popular over the seasons, her unpleasant tone was unbearable for fans.
Susan Meyer, ‘Desperate Housewives’
Exhausting, stubborn, annoying … Teri Hatcher was not exactly our favorite character in the ‘Desperate Housewives’ series.
Dana Brody, ‘Homeland’
Many fans accuse Dana Brody in ‘Homeland’ of slowing down the series’ episodes. Others find their apathetic nature simply unbearable. For example, many compare them to Bella Swan from the Twilight saga.
Hiro Nakamura, ‘Heroes’
He may seem funny and personable at first glance , but the truth is that Hiro in Heroes is pretty quickly becoming the series ‘ undisputed master saw.
Clay Jennsen, ‘Dead girls do not lie’
Clay Jennsen, played by Dylan Minette, is a somewhat contradictory character. There are fans of ‘dead girls do not lie’ who love him and others who hate him deeply. Is it because he does not convince as a protagonist because he has an excessive sense of justice and knows he was part of the problem in Hannah’s death? Or is it because of his non-existent charisma?
Sookie Stackhouse, ‘True Blood’
Childish, repellent, immature – there are many reasons why fans of ‘True Blood’ can not stand Sookie Stackhouse, played by Anna Paquin.
Tyrelle Wellick, ‘Mr. Robot ‘
Another character who never convinced us was Tyrelle Wellick in ‘Mr. Robot ‘, played by Mark Wallström.
Jack Randall, ‘Outlander’
Jack Randall in ‘Outlander’ is portrayed by actor Tobias Menzies – and he shows us how a flawless interpretation of a despicable character really works. Hats off!
