Sam Champion was born on August 13, 1961, in Paducah, Kentucky, United States. He is best known for anchoring and forecasting weather news. He is currently co-anchoring The Weather Channel’s AMHQ: America’s Morning Headquarters.
Champion was born and raised in Kentucky. His educational qualification includes a Bachelor Degree in broadcast news from the Eastern Kentucky University. He was good in his studies and hence got a new internship at WKYT-TV, a CBS-affiliated television station, in Lexington, Kentucky.
Sam started his broadcasting journey with an internship at the CBS’s Kentucky affiliated station. He then worked for various stations such as WPSD-TV, WCWJ, WABC-TV among others as a weathercaster. His big break came when he was chosen to forecast the weather at Good Morning America.
From 2006 to late 2013, he worked at ABC’s Good Morning America and ABC News. His salary at GMA was much talked about. It was an estimated $1.5 million per year as of 2012.
Rumors started to fuel up about Sam leaving ABC. Some said ABC fired Sam while others stated that Sam had a fight with some colleague and his ABC friends betrayed him. Others had other things to say about Sam. There is no evidence substantiating any of these rumors. But Sam left ABC News.
Sam announced his departure in December 2013. Shortly after, he joined The Weather Channel, where he became an on-air presence and the managing editor.
Aside from his daily appearance on television to read the weather news at the Weather Channel’s morning show titled America’s Morning Headquarters, he occasionally appears on ‘Live! With Kelly and Michael’, a daily talk show, and also on the CNN’s most popular talk show, Larry King Life.
Sam never had knowledge about meteorology or even studied it. He gained all his knowledge from his broadcasting experience. His passion and interest in weather news reporting led him to become a famous weather newscaster today.
Moving on to Champion’s personal life, he is married. His partner is Rubem Robierb, Sam’s longtime boyfriend. He was not open about his sexual orientation at first, and his friends and colleagues say they also didn’t know about Sam’s orientation.
The fuss about Sam being gay was in the news very long ago when he was linked to former baseball player Mike Piazza.
In 2002, there were rumors that Sam and Piazza dated. But Piazza cleared the rumors out in a press conference saying that he would never have an affair with a man, claiming that he was not gay. However, there have been no rumors recently about his issues, divorce or other romantic links.
